MIAMI LAW FIRMS

OK. I just spent a significant amount of time going to the websites of about 75 of the largest law firms with offices in Miami to see if they had any positions listed there. First of all, how come they all look the same? Someone must have come up with a standard template and everyone else just said let's copy theirs. Of course, lots of them don't list job openings. Of those that do, a majority had no positions available at all for support staff. And mind you, ever after 20 years of experience and great technical skills, I'm willing to work as a temporary file clerk if it will get me back out there again. Finally, I actually found a listing for a legal word processor, a perfect fit. So I quickly sent a resume and then noticed that the office is all the way down in Dadeland. But I'll go. I'll take the bus and the train and go to Kendall from South Beach (just like I did during Hurricane Andrew) if it gets me back to work. We'll see. One recruiter who I used to work with when he was an attorney told me that my plan to pack up and move to Chicago was probably a good idea given the job market here. Not encouraging. Oh, and I'm sure because they are in Kendall, they will want to pay 10% less at least than the downtown firms. At this point, I'll take anything. I sure wish I had learned a skill to fall back on like waiting tables instead of going to college and then spending 20 years working for law firms.

Hang in there, hopefully things will get better soon. I've followed your blog for a while now, initially led here by JMG.
I love all the pictures of Miami, especially now during the frigid northern winter.
Chicago is an excellent place (that's where I am now), but if you thought Miami was freezing today, be glad you aren't up here
Stay warm and keep well...

My firm hasn't laid anyone off yet, though they've deferred compensation until April 1.

PS. I'm a paralegal.
